What this is

GoatDebate is an independent fan project. It takes the 76 players named to the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team and lets you decide what "greatest" means: fourteen sliders, each weighting a different argument — rings, longevity, defense, loyalty, three-peats, and the rest. Move them and the leaderboard re-ranks live.

There is no house answer. The default weights are one defensible starting point, not a verdict.

Not affiliated with the NBA

GoatDebate is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the National Basketball Association, any NBA team, or any player. Team and player names appear for identification and commentary only, and all trademarks belong to their respective owners.

Where the numbers come from

Career statistics come from Basketball-Reference, verified field by field in July 2026 — around 280 corrections were applied during that pass. Counts of 50-point games come from StatMuse. Both are excellent resources and worth your time directly.

Statistics are facts, but assembling them involves judgment: stats that did not exist in a given era, ABA totals, awards invented mid-career. Every one of those decisions is documented on the asterisks page — including the cases where we discarded a real published number because using it would have misled you.

Photos and licensing

Player portraits come from Wikimedia Commons and are public domain or Creative Commons licensed. Images carrying non-commercial or no-derivatives terms were excluded. Each photo has been resized and color-treated to fit the site's palette; full per-photo attribution and license links are on the credits page.

Photos are used editorially, to identify the player whose statistics you are reading. GoatDebate does not and will not use any player's likeness on merchandise or to imply endorsement.

Privacy: we collect nothing

No accounts, no cookies, no analytics, no tracking pixels, no third-party scripts. We do not know who you are and we are not trying to find out.

Your slider settings are saved in your own browser's local storage so the site remembers your formula between visits. That data never leaves your device. When you share a take, the formula is encoded into the link itself — which is why sharing works without us storing anything at all.

Accuracy

Every number was verified against its source, but this is a fan project and errors are possible. Active players' statistics change every season; figures here are current through the 2025–26 season. Nothing on this site is offered as professional advice or for betting purposes.

If you spot a mistake, or you hold rights to a photo and want it removed, we want to hear about it and will fix it quickly.
